Oh how I love all of the books in this series. I remember reading the 2nd one first, stopping it to buy/read the 1st because I had no clue what was going on and being completely mesmerized. Haunted houses, ghosts and Nantucket does not sound like an ideal scenario, but it's the best background for these stories. In this one we are reintroduced to the same cast of characters from the first 2 books but with the addition of Jamie and Hallie. Hallie, after dealing with a dad/stepmom that passed away and raising an entitled step sister, is due a break and a chance to chill. She ends up in Nantucket, having inherited a house from a long lost relative, and will be using her physical therapy degree use in rehabbing Jamie after a ski accident. Jamie, a doctor and war veteran, not only has a knee injury but some other scars that he's not sure Hallie can heal.
As one can imagine, they bump heads almost immediately but the chemistry is there. Add in 2 beautiful sister ghosts that roam the house and are intent on getting them together and you have such an engaging story. I've enjoyed this series and I've already added in some of the older books to read along with the new series. I can't wait!

Ever After A Nantucket Brides Novel Nantucket Brides Trilogy Jude Deveraux 9780345541857 Books Reviews
"Using kisses to calm him from a nightmare wasn't exactly professional behavior."
THE STORY Hallie Hartley is just beginning her career as a physical therapist. Hallie's stepsister Shelly impersonates her in order to take her inheritance, a house on Nantucket. When Hallie finds out, she decides to step into the role that Shelly had created -- being the physical therapist for a man who will be staying at Hallie's Nantucket house. James "Jamie" Michael Taggert was injured in a skiing accident and comes to Nantucket to recover. Jamie is pleased to find out of the switch in sisters because he finds Hallie much more attractive than her sister. Jamie, however, has secrets that he doesn't want to share which has caused him to want to recover away from his loving family. Jamie and Hallie also discover that the house they inhabit might be haunted by the ghosts of two sisters who are infamous matchmakers.
OPINION This is the story of two people who have been damaged by life and bear scars physical and emotional. Hallie has survived despite her dysfunctional family and Jamie is hiding from the overwhelming love of his wonderful family. They join forces and manage to heal one another.
Hallie has been beaten down by her stepmother and stepsister. Abandoned by her family emotionally, she has gotten used to being second choice of almost everyone. At the same time, she is smart and sensible and works hard. When she discovers her stepsister's deception, she doesn't succumb to drama but takes on the responsibility of being Jamie's physical therapist.
Jamie has a big loving family but he cannot bear to be with them because they are smothering him with their concern and care. When he comes to Nantucket, he finds that Hallie's practical refusal to coddle him is exactly what he needs.
I really liked the updates on the characters from prior books and the appearances of various Montgomerys and Taggerts.
Unlike the prior books in the series, the ghosts here are less important to the story and are merely traditional hauntings. I missed the immediacy of the importance of the ghosts' stories from the previous books in the series. There is nothing to be resolved with these ghosts. As a result, they remain distant and ultimately unknowable and less real than the other ghosts of Nantucket.
What was refreshing in this book was the practical and adult nature of the relationship between Hallie and Jamie. The two talk and have a relationship beyond the drama and emotional upheaval. They do simple things together that form the foundation of their relationship.
Ultimately, I liked this one a tiny bit less than the others in the series, but the addition of the influx of Montgomerys and Taggerts made the book funnier and sweeter.
WORTH MENTIONING Lots of Montgomerys and Taggerts make appearances here. I have only read a couple of books in the series so I don't recognize everyone but I can tell that readers of the series will know who these people are and get updated on their lives.
FINAL DECISION I liked this story because of its connection to the broader Montgomery/Taggert series. This story felt cozy and filled with loving family. I especially liked that Hallie is able to help Jamie in ways that his family is not and how she is absorbed into the family. I thought the ghost story was a weakness here. It was better developed in the other books in the trilogy.
CONNECTED BOOKS EVER AFTER is the third book in the Nantucket Bride Trilogy. This one can be read as a standalone although characters from prior books appear. This trilogy is also connected with the larger Montgomery/Taggert series.
STAR RATING I give this book 4.25 stars.
NOTE I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in order to provide an honest review of the book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.

What Jude Deveraux does better than just about anyone is make the average person seem larger than life. No matter the time span, he characters from the outside looking in seem pretty much a person of their times. Yet once she opens them up and shares them with us, they are super heroes.. they have depth and passion, they overcome obstacles, they are sometimes downtrodden but never down for the count. They are resilient, compassionate and in the end strong. Because of this ability Ms. Deveraux has, I have been a huge fan for years (even decades).
The only thing better than a Jude Deveraux book is a Jude Deveraux book about the Montgomerys and the Taggerts. Seriously, I am so in love with these characters. Ever after is book three in her Nantucket Brides Trilogy and yes, it has plenty of both the Montgomerys and the Taggerts.. YAY!!
Hallie Hartley was the Cinderella daughter, forced to give up first her childhood, then her college education and finally her adult life in caring for a manipulative step mother and her indulgent, self centered Step Sister. With the death of their parents, Hallie is forced to be the sole caregiver and responsible adult and yet still managed to struggle on. Tolerant and forgiving. That is until she walks in on said step sister trying to steal her inheritance. For some reason, Hallie has finally had enough and is determined to maybe this time, have a life of her own.
James Taggert (yes one of those Taggerts) has had a rough few years. The sole survivor from an attack in Iraq, he suffers from severe PTSD and to top it all off, his brother convinced him to go skiing where he suffered a serious knee injury. He needs something to help him, both with his physical therapy and also his life. A nice quiet retreat on Nantucket seems nice. But when his Physical Therapist shows up he is hit with instant desire.. and the more he gets to know her, the more in love he falls. Now if he can just convince her that she's not a stand in for the woman he thought was going to show up (said step sister)
Once again Ms. Deveraux wows. The ever insane interactions between the Taggerts and the Montgomerys makes me want to become a member of either family or run screaming for the hills if I ever met them.. usually at the same time. It's always fun to watch them overwhelm fresh blood. It takes a strong character to rise above the strong personalities of even the weakest Montgomery or Taggert. It has to be difficult to create such depth of character.
But as great as James and Hallie are.. they are not without flaws. Hallie is so conditioned to be the doormat it takes some skilled manipulating to get her to wake up. To get her to acknowledge that maybe she needs to stand up for herself. The other side of that coin is, it would be easy to turn her into a shrew bent on revenge but that's not how Ms. Deveraux rolls, instead she imbibes Hallie with the strength of character to become who she was meant to be.
Now James? He has to face some reality as well.. he has PTSD and it's scary but you don't just get over it. You need to be able to lean on those who can help you. You can't let fear control your life..
Another great thing Ms. Deveraux does?? She takes a character that is written as the villain or villainess.. and shows us the other side of the coin. Things are rarely what we think they are. And in Ever After she does this with such aplomb that once again I was lost in love.
Just a great book.
