It Takes a Witch A Wishcraft Mystery Heather Blake Books

This was a light quick read. I heard about it on The Book Babble - Suitably Sassy Book Reviews. She said about the author "She combines romance, whodunit, and magic in a lighthearted setting based in Enchanted Village, Massachusetts." That was right on target. It is romantic without being sexy. The characters are fun, well rounded and cleverly written. The story is a fast, easy read and could possibly be done in one day (although I did not read it that fast).
Darcy, the main character, is a wishcrafter - a witch that has the responsibility to grant wishes. She is a grown woman who has just learned of her gift and is living with her Aunt outside of Salem, Massachusetts in a tourist spot called Enchanted Village. Other witches with different abilities and some regular mortals also live and have businesses there. A murder happens and Darcy tries to find out the perpetrator. A lot of twists and turns and a little danger later we find out who it is.
The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is it is a lot lighter than I am used to reading. If you like light, fast romantic novels, you would rate it a 5.

It Takes a Witch A Wishcraft Mystery Heather Blake Books Reviews

Absolute perfect read. I loved every minute of this book. Kudos to the publisher Obsidian. The best mass market size PB I've ever read. Floppy...so much so there is zero spine crease when finishing the book..that is PERFECTION. The print is also amazing it's not large print but so much more comfortable than regular print on these small PB books. I purchased the next two books. I just really loved the authors style the story line...just a fast paced and fantastic read...
It Takes a Witch is wonderful! I got lost in the Enchanted Village and loved it. Delightful and intriguing characters fill the novel and I can't wait to get to know all of them better. Darcy and Harper Merriweather have just learned they are witches and moved in with their aunt Ve to learn their wishcraft. Yes, wish craft. Darcy is amazed to learn how much she enjoys the craft while Harper would rather find another route for her life. The community near Salem was developed with a hide-in-plan-site plan; they all follow a central business theme of witchcraft. Ve's business, As You Wish, provides services similar to concierge service but has the added benefit of being able to provide real wishes if they are spoken correctly and with heath felt intent. Darcy isn't always prepared for the wishes she encounters but she has to honor them as long as they are done properly. Some of the humor of the story comes from those wishes and her reaction but much of it comes from the normal interaction between people.

The book becomes a cozy paranormal mystery when a woman is killed after a community meeting and the man that Ve is interested in is found over the body. The police are more interested in closing the case than in finding the killer so Darcy and Harper are pulled into the investigation. The strength of the mystery as well as the novel as a whole is the complexity of the characters. Be prepared, Once you dive into this story, you will be there for a while.
I really enjoyed this story. It is the kind of book that is perfect on a day when you are curled up in bed recovering from a cold. Fun, intriguing, but not requiring such depth of thought that you need to be healthy and functioning on all cylinders.

Darcy and Harper have just learned that they are hereditary witches, specifically, able to grant wishes. The problem is that they can't tell anyone, because crafter laws do not allow it, and they don't know all the laws, or who else in town is a crafter. Their Aunt Ve is giving them some guidance, but then a local shop owner is killed and Aunt Ve's gentleman friend is accused. Darcy does not want to get involved, but between granting wishes and meeting a hot investigator, she cannot help being in the thick of things.

The focus in this book is the introduction of characters and the mystery, not the romance, which was refreshing. Both sisters, though young, have a history that makes them interesting. Aunt Ve is charming, and I found myself wondering about her.

The only downfall with this book were a few red herrings that were pretty obvious. But overall, it is delightful.
I chose a four-star rating because of a few typos I found in the first chapter of the book. It always makes me cringe when this happens because it pulls me out of the story itself.

Once past the typos I settled into the story, which consists of likeable characters living near Salem, MA in the Enchanted Village. The story has drama, laughter, intrigue and a touch of romance. The author worked hard to deliver a new type of "witch" who comes with strict of magical rules. The rules are easily understood and delivered in a manner that is easy for the reader to comprehend. I was magically transported to this village and felt like I walked along side the characters as they progressed through the story. This is the highest praise I can give an author. When I feel like I'm living inside the story I get the most enjoyment out of the book. This story delivered a wonderful reading experience!

I would recommend this book to those who enjoy cozy mysteries AND fantasy. There are a number of magical non-human characters, so you must be willing to set aside reality and "believe" in these characters. This story is a mixture of old fashioned Disney movies, Murder She Wrote, with a little bit of Agatha Christie thrown in for good measure. I kept trying to guess "who-dun-it" until the end of the book. My guesses changed throughout the story and were all wrong! However, the clues as to the actual murderer are all set down in the book and make perfect sense when the author reveals why, how and who is guilty of murder. Well done and thank you for an intriguing and enjoyable story.
