I like my heroes a little dark and tortured. Undiluted virtue can be boring. Despite a thin plot line, I really enjoyed The Earl's Mistress for the first two-thirds regardless of the sexually sadistic hero. It didn't offend my feminist sensibilities since Isabella was a willing participant in Lord Heppleworth's games. Lord Tafford's pedophilia was a story element that added a necessary layer of evil to her nasty cousin who sought custody of Isabella's young stepsisters to force her into marriage. Without the pedophilia, why wouldn't selfless Isabella have married Tafford long ago for the sake of the girls she loved? They could have been raised in comfort rather than poverty, so there had to be a compelling reason for her to choose otherwise. Carlyle had to make him unacceptable, hence he's pervy. That said, rarely have I read a book where the exact moment of derailment is so obvious. This occurs after Isabella goes to Anthony's country home with seven children between the ages of one and twelve, Anthony's pregnant cousin Anne, and a nursemaid. The reader is supposed to believe that they all sleep like Rip Van Winkle while Isabella and Tony indulge in the most outrageous sexual shenanigans, rattling chains, whips and bondage, sighing and groaning and gasping the night away. All this even though virtuous Isabella was desperate that no one find out about the affair and besotted Anthony does not wish to ruin her reputation. But KATIE BAR THE DOOR! They indulge in a kinky humpfestival complete with dildoes while seven children sleep in the rooms next room. Oy! It strains the bounds of believability just a tad.
Until the exact moment that Anthony whipped out the hanging chains, I was on board. Then it all fell apart. What if Lissie or Georgie or Jemima or Caroline or… whomever… thought they heard Jacob Marley's ghost and went to Isabella for comfort? Would it not scar a child just a wee bit to walk in on her older sister trussed up like a Christmas turkey with Lord Hepplewood thrusting away doggie style? At that precise moment the story stopped making sense and the sex became repetitive as did Anthony's and Isabella's endless musings about their future and why they couldn't be together even though they clearly loved each other and nothing stood in their way.
I started skimming pages, disappointed a book that began with such promise deteriorated into a string of sex scenes that felt like filler. Carlyle's editor should have said, "Liz, about the trip to the country... think you could develop the relationship a bit more rather than have them rut like randy teenagers at summer camp?"

The Earl Mistress MacLachlan Family Friends Liz Carlyle 9780062100306 Books Reviews
Definitely an earlier work, but still very enjoyable. A little light bdsm and lots of romance. I love how Carlyle doesn't just have a romance but always also a mystery to be solved. Just love her novels. I've been rebuying books I owned in hard copy so that I'll have them on kindle and every single Carlyle book is being added to my ebook library. Take your breath away language i love it
I almost didn't read this book because of the bad reviews - I'm glad I ignored them. This was a sweet story with some light bdsm. Naysayers should realize this lifestyle isn't their cup of tea instead condemning it. The heroine was neither forced or demeaned.
I've never read Shades of Gray, but I do admit I have quickly scanned a few pages once or twice. That type of book is not for me. I am not into kinky play or spankings, butt plugs or filthy language. I want a story with love, obsession, possession, romance and passion. That being said, this story had about 2 scenes that slightly pushed the envelope. No where near some of these reviews and certainly NOT like shades of gray.
First, I have never read from this author and I purchased this book by complete accident! I held off in reading it for a few days because of the negative reviews (pedophile rumors). But, being that I don't like to waste money, I decided to take a chance and read this book...bad reviews and all.
I am so glad I did!!! I have to say I LOVED IT!! Yes, I did! I loved it!
The story is about a young lady "Isabella" that is broke, looking for a stable job to take care of sisters (her family is dead and she has no money). She applied to a governess position, held by a very mean man (so HE believes) "Anthony". Anthony meets Isabella and falls in lust with her. He denies her this job, instead flirts and taunts her. She is very strong and not afraid to put him in his place. Of course, a man like him thinks he has found his match, and that makes him want her more. But, it also scares him. So, he chases her away.
She goes on her way, no job, no money, and no hope. He realizes he may have made a mistake and goes out to find her. During this time, her very evil cousin is chasing her, he wants her for a specific reason (by the way, we don't know the REAL reason until the end). His mother is also evil. Now, this is where the pedophile rumors came in.
*Spoiler Alert*
I was molested as a child and the thoughts of reading such a disgusting subject distraught me. But, in this story, there are no details of this disgraceful act, in fact, there is really no mention of it! There is a mention of an attack to a young 12 y/o girl early on in the book, but again, no details. Just that he "knows what he did to her".
The story continues with Anthony falling so in love with Isabella it made me tingle! Like all story's, he is a rogue but does not cheat on her. He gives his soul to her in the first kiss (that made him become obsessed and possessive of her). He also has a daughter and a back story so one never gets bored.
There was passion, lust, love, sex (in detail but not too explicit). What I really liked was how Anthony spoke to Isabella in the bedroom. It was hot, gentle, passionate (of course after the initial sexual encounter, which again, was a little spanking or two. And only ONCE with a whip so people please..... I have read A LOT WORSE by Anne Rice).
Again, this is my first book by Liz Carlyle and I LOVED IT! I gave it 5 stars because, well it deserved it!! It was an incredible read, never boring, very heated and sexy, made me laugh and made me cry. All of which I expect in a good story.
I hope you give it a try. It was emotionally wonderful!!
LC is one of my favourite writers and this book was well written tho many have trashed it for two love scenes that may or may not be their choice of sexual preference. Who am I to judge what is right or wrong in the bedrooms of others, what happens between consenting adults. It is the story I loved about two people destined to be together beyond all costs, despite their pasts and current situations.
LC has a way of resolving details and not filling a read with useless page filling verbal rhetoric like so many do in this genre. She gets down into the soul of her characters with detailed descriptions of their thoughts and feelings to the point I feel I know them and am experiencing emotions I often feel myself. She doesn't write useless prose that interferes with the story or ups her word count. For this I will always read her books and admire her style, tho it may not always relate to my choices or preferences.
